We’re always hearing that we can, and should, be more creative, but how? It’s easier than you think, as Sketchbook Skool co-founder Koosje Koene shows you in this video. Remember, any new habit needs a little effort, but once you start, you’ll find you won’t want to go a day without it! To keep that creative habit going, check out our klasses, and take a look at these great tips from our students.
Tips to start a creative habit
Get your 3 favorite pens, keep one at home, one for your art bag or work briefcase, and one to always carry in your purse. That way, you’ll never be without your favorite art tool.
Keep a small sketchbook in your bag or purse, and in glove compartment of your car. When you’re on the go, you’ll never miss a chance for a quick sketch. Plus, think of all the time we spend waiting in lines, at the doctor’s office, at restaurants, etc. Instead of getting impatient, get creative! Take out your sketchbook and pen and draw people, your surroundings, and a sketcher’s favorite model, your own shoe.
Keep a sketchbook on your night stand for late night doodles or on your coffee table for your art before breakfast. Stashing them throughout the house means one sketchbook is always handy. Plus, it is kind of fun to see the different sketches and styles that emerge from different parts of your day like right before you sleep or during your morning coffee.
Don’t take your sketching too seriously. Your pages are a playground. Don’t treat each page as a sacred object, but part of the process, messes and all.
Creativity is a way of life that doesn’t end with the paint brush and pen. All of our creative habits have the power to influence each other, so if the urge to cook something new or play guitar strikes, go with it! Who knows? That new recipe or the song lyrics you can’t get out of your head might make a great drawing later on!
